Spanish (Combined BA/MA)

The Dual Degree program in Spanish is an accelerated five-year option designed for students who wish to pursue baccalaureate and master’s degrees simultaneously. The Department of Spanish and Italian offers a Master of Arts degree in Spanish literature with a wide range of courses in Spanish and Spanish American literature as well as in literary theory, Hispanic linguistics, culture and pedagogy, and translation and interpreting. Conferences and lectures by Latin American and Spanish writers are an integral part of the cultural life of the MA program and students frequently have the opportunity to meet authors they have studied in class.

Along with the Spanish (Combined BA/MA) degree, the department also offers the following options for graduate study: Spanish, Spanish (Combined BA/MAT), and a Translation and Interpreting in Spanish certificate.

Students who have already completed a baccalaureate degree are not eligible. Please contact your program advisor to inquire about eligibility for the BA/MA in Spanish.

In order to make applying for graduate school as seamless as possible for you, we have
created an application checklist. This checklist can be a reference point for you during the
application process to ensure that you have a comprehensive understanding of the steps
needed to apply, as well as all of corresponding supplemental materials for your specific
program of interest.

  • Application Deadline: Rolling admission.
  • Submit Online Application: Please create your online account and submit your application by following the general application instructions and pay (or waive) the non-refundable $60 application fee. Once this step has been completed, the online portal will allow you to upload your supplemental materials.

The following is a list of the supplemental materials that will accompany your application for the Spanish (Combined BA/MA) program:

  • Transcript: One from each college attended.
  • Essays/Personal Statement: Please write an integrated essay providing a response to each of the following questions:
    • What are your goals for graduate study and your future career?
    • In what ways do your academic background and your professional experiences provide evidence of your potential for success in the program you selected and in your eventual career?
    • Please give specific examples of relevant coursework and/or experience.
    • Is there any further information we should consider in assessing your candidacy?
  • Letters of Recommendation: Two.
  • Students holding degrees from non-US institutions must request a course-by-course transcript evaluation from a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services or by Educated Choices. TOEFL or IELTS is required for applicants to any program who earned their degree in a country where English is not the official language. Students enrolled in this program complete the Spanish program with a comprehensive exam. This program requires the completion of 33 semester hours: 4 courses for 12 hours will be transferred from the UG program. For more information, please visit the program listing in the University Catalog.

  • All applicants to the MA or the Graduate Certificate program in Translation must pass a free qualifying exam (QE) to be considered for admission. Those applying to two language pairs must take the full exam in one language pair and the translation portion only in the second language pair.

QEs are offered in fall and spring terms. Applicants who wish to begin in fall should take the exam the fall prior to entry; those who wish to begin in spring should take the exam in the spring prior to entry.

International applicants must: pass the QE and present a minimum TOEFL iBT score of 83; TOEFL CBT score of 220; or IELTS score of 6.5 to be considered for admission.

All applicants must:

  • translate a 200-250-word text from their second language into their first (with dictionaries)
  • write a 300- to 500-word essay in English on a general topic related to translation

Exam Format & Sample Texts

The two-hour, computer-based exam is administered remotely using e-mail and MS Word (or a Word-compatible program). Sample exams are provided below as models of the translation section of the exam only. New texts and essay questions are used for every exam.

Exam Registration

Complete the online form below to register for the exam. Excellent writing skills are required to be successful, so we strongly recommend that you select the exam from your second language into your first language. For example, if you first spoke English and subsequently spoke Spanish, choose the “Spanish to English” exam. If you are bilingual from childhood, choose the language in which you feel you have stronger writing skills. If you are applying to two language pairs or have another question, please indicate this in the “Comments” box and the exam coordinator will contact you.

Applicants who do not pass on the first attempt may retake the exam. A positive exam result is valid for two years.

After submitting the exam registration form, you can expect to receive an e-mail on the following business day with detailed exam instructions.
